Open since September 2007, Blue Marble is a wonderful earth-friendly ice cream place in Brooklyn. The farm fresh organic ice cream is made in small batches using locally sourced organic milk. Aside from the ice cream being truly delicious, I really appreciate the founders’ commitment to the environment.
I had been meaning to go there for a while, especially since they recently opened a second location within a few blocks of me in Prospect Heights. As irony would have it, I ended up at their original location on Atlantic Avenue last Sunday. The ice cream is absolutely delicious. I had the pistachio-almond and the chocolate chip, both of which were outstanding. The pistachio-almond was nutty and sweet and the perfect balance of the two flavors, while the chocolate chip was everything chocolate chip should be – creamy ice cream with just the right amount of chocolate chips bringing an additional, but not overpowering, layer of flavor.
Blue Marble was founded by two friends, Alexis and Jennie, who have made environmental protection and sustainability as important a part of Blue Marble as the delicious ice cream. The store on Atlantic Avenue is powered with hydroelectric and wind power generated in New York and all the utensils are bio-degradable. Many of their ingredients are locally sourced. Their coffee is fair-trade and there is extensive information on the website about all of their suppliers, near and far.
Blue Marble’s commitment to improving the world goes beyond their immediate home in Brooklyn . Alexis and Jennie are currently working on “Sweet Dreams: The Power of Ice Cream,” a project to set up a non-profit in Rwanda to open an ice cream store. You can read about it on their blog.
The original Blue Marble is at 420 Atlantic Avenue, just a couple of stops into Brooklyn if you are in Manhattan (on the right you can see their list of flavors). Their website does not yet feature the new second store but I promise you it’s there! It’s at 187 Underhill Avenue in Prospect Heights. Furthermore, Blue Marble is also sold at the Brooklyn Flea most Sundays.

BTW, I’m a lawyer too. I’ve been semi-retired since I had my daughter, but I still keep my hand in. There are an awful lot of blogging lawyers out there, many with food blogs.
It really is a very tasty place. You know, I think many lawyers are really frustrated writers so turn to blogging — at least that’s what happened to me
