How do you like your pizza?

I tried Pete’s Apizza in Columbia Heights recently and was pleasantly surprised. The crust was thin and crispy and I found the toppings subtle and not too heavy – the standout was the sausage and wild mushroom slice I had, though the cheese slice was good too. My husband, on the other hand, said that the crust was thin as a cracker and everything kind of bland which, considering he had two slices of pepperoni, was quite a contrast to my opinion. I tried his slice and actually liked it.

As a total aside, Pete’s Apizza also had gelato, but it was way too cold for anything cold. The setting of the restaurant is lovely – long wooden table, good lighting. The slices are in the neighborhood of $3, while a large pie is in the $20 range — because we were just stopping for a quick dinner before going to Target, we got slices.

But the trip to Pete’s got me thinking – I have always favored the thinner crispier styles of pizza, though once in a while a floppy NY-style pizza slice really hits the spot. Beyond that, I kind of ignore other pizzas out there. Pete’s bills itself as New Haven-style pizza – which to me always seems to be crispier NY-style pizza (I am almost afraid of writing this last sentence and setting off some sort of pizza-lovers outrage). Plus, it’s not a matter of just thin and crispy versus large and floppy — there’s so many other variations in-between.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Oh and sort of relatedly, can I say how happy I am that Washington DC has a Target — last time I lived here, Target meant a trip to Virginia, and living under a mile from the Brooklyn Target really spoiled me. So I am thinking that more nights of Pete’s Apizza and Target are in order.

In general, I also like a thin slice–if it is from any other place than our local Mark’s Pizzeria. There’s is thicker–but I’ve been eating it since they opened shop #1 of several dozen in my hometown back in 1982.

As for Target, I am there a couple days a week. Thankfully we have one in our town, and 5 others within 10 miles or so.

While you’re at Target, you might look for the book Pete’s a Pizza to go along with your pizza theme–it’s one of Nick’s favorite books.
