As I tweeted (or twittered?) yesterday, it seems that a gelato place is opening three blocks from where I live in Washington DC. The new Pitango Gelato will be at 1451 P Street NW, Washington, DC, which happens to be across the street from the P Street Whole Foods (why or why can’t you be like the Lower East Side Whole Foods or the Time Warner Center Whole Foods in New York– wait, I digress) To the right you see the photographic evidence of the gelato coming to my neck of the woods, but a little more research brought some great information.
The Humble Gourmand has a post that let me know that Pitango Gelato is made with grass-fed, organic milk sourced from the owner’s fairy, Spring Wood Organic Farm in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. That’s music to my ears, considering how much I loved the ice cream made from grass-fed milk at Blue Marble in Brooklyn (one of their stores was within blocks of where I lived, le sigh). Now, Blue Marble was ice cream, not gelato, so this Pitango concept of gelato with grass-fed milk is even more interesting to me, especially since according to Pitango’s website, including the fact that they have a strong focus on organic and fresh ingredient sourcing.
Seems like Tour del Gelato (an ongoing blogroll of gelato places) will be adding a stop in Washington, DC very shortly. Come to think of it, I still owe you all a Tour del Gelato post from my visit to Dolcezza in
