On Staycations

I know staycations have become this uber-trendy concept now, with the down economy, but I always kind of liked them. As much a I like to explore new places, I do love the idea of being on vacation minus the travel time and cost.

ALL YOU Magazine has a great staycation feature this month, including excellent suggestions on hosting a DIY film festical and setting the scene.

Here are some of my tips:

*try not to be tempted to run errands just because you have a couple of days off where you live {full disclosure: much to husband’s dismay, I often run errands on staycations}

*do indulge at least once, whether it be spa time, dining out or a fun-new-to-you activity {remember, you are not paying for travel and hotel}

*explore your city as a tourist {I know, years of living in Washington, DC and New York have spoilt me – so easy to be a tourist in those cities}

*time your staycation to coincide with a fun in-town retreat or event, like I did back in June

*remember you are on vacation

What do you think of staycations?
Do you love them even if they are a product of necessity?

Oh, how I love staycations. I took a 5-day one over Memorial Day weekend and it was heavenly. I basically did nothing but read and nap. I have to start "booking" my next one soon!

Such a good reminder! There are so many lovely things to do and see in this city that I never feel like I have time to do. I need to make a giant list of them and start exploring! When you live in VA and work and go to school in Farragut West/Foggy Bottom, just going to Adams Morgan for a day feels like a trip in and of itself!

This is the first time I've heard of this term and it sounds very interesting. You are right there are so many things to do in one's own town, which we don't usually do.

I've found that it's easy to take staycations in a city, but harder when you're further away from the bright lights – then it just seems more like a retreat. Any tips on how to do more "retreating" in the city, and more out-and-about away from the cities?

HI!

I found you via Pencil Skirts & Pearls..

Am loving the blog already, added you to my RSS reader

AS for staycations.. I'm on a permanent staycation until I find my next contract in IT (am a freelancer), so I think they're a necessity đŸ˜‰

Great tips… I love the idea of staycations and usually do them myself. I don't know about you but I still have'nt been to all the attractions in my own state.

I particularly like to go to a luxury hotel and spend the weekend. Then I have no temptation to, as you say, run errands…

I have just started exploring where I live as I am on maternity leave. Any time off in the past we have spent it away from home – finding lots of fun things to see and do that I did not even knkow existed so I give "staycations" a huge thumbs up right now.
