The Next Chapter: The Joy Diet

by Valerie on September 18, 2009 · 23 comments

I am so excited that today is the beginning of Jamie Ridler’s online bookclub, The Next Chapter.  The book is The Joy Diet: Ten Daily Practices for a Happier Life by Martha Beck.

I had been thinking all summer that I really wanted to do some sort of “work through way through a book” project this fall.  The last timeI had that feeling was in late 2007, and I started the Artist’s Way, stopped, and started again.  Ultimately, what I learned was that I wanted to grow my blog and I became really involved in that rather than finish the last 5 weeks of the book, but I found working my way through more than half of it invaluable.  I was considering revisiting it this fall, but wanted something just a little lighter – not so much in how hard the exercises can be, but in magnitude of time commitment.  And I did not want it to feel as lonely as the Artist’s Way did.  And at about that point, several blogger friends started mentioning that Jamie’s fall book would be the Joy Diet.  A few tweets with Ellecubed who had started reading the book (and had great things to say) and a trip to Borders was all that it took for me to sign up.

I hope to find more playfulness in the every day.  Yes, it is about answering the hard questions, but it is also about find more joy and play, at least for me.  I look forward to reading this book and hearing the thoughts of my fellow book club members.

Hi! I'm a pilgrim on the Joy Diet journey, too.

I'm looking forward to reading, thinking, writing and reading!

Nothing – that's going to be a tough one for me!

Good luck!

Yay so glad you are doing this too! I often think that as soon as I graduate I need to do Kimberly's Creativity Circle and work through those books as well. This will be a great start to eventually doing something like that!

Hear, hear! As a city girl myself, I resonated with your desire to find something like this but not have it require too much time commitment. I look forward to reading your entries as we go on this journey!

It is so great to hear about your experiences with The Artist Way. I thought that I was the only one who found the books journey to be really lonely.

I am so happy that you are participating. This should be a really fun journey.

I'm so glad this is showing up at just the right time and feeling like just the right fit. There's definitely going to be more playfulness – especially since one of the ingredients is Play!

Enjoy :)

I, too, have had on and off starts with The Artist's Way, and yet it has affected me significantly – one of these days I'll finish it – but it's not so important that it all be done at once.

Am looking forward to travelling with you and others through the Joy Diet.
