Java Green – A Tasty Destination

Yes, I changed my blog name – I promise to update you all on the reasons soon – but as I was going through my past blog posts, I realized I had not yet posted about Java Green, which is really a gem in the middle of Washington, DC.  Lauren of Everyday Revelry reminded me about it about a year ago and I am so glad she did! Most of the options there are vegan and the few vegetarian options can be veganized by removing the cheese.  Additionally, gluten-free options are clearly marked.  A gluten-free vegan meal there is not only possible, but delicious! And since I can eat more soy now than I could a year ago, I have been enjoying the spicy tofu at Java Green. It really is truly delicious.

Below are a couple of my favorite dishes:

The vegan bim bim bap with spicy tofu:

Clearly I am obsessed with the spicy tofu- it is also very good with the jobche, which is made with gluten-free yam noodles here (that was my lunch today):

Finally Java Green has an awesome lemonade, made with agave and fresh lemon juice:

The best part is that Java Green uses raw agave – in fact they use the same kind I have started buying since reading the negative press on certain agave processing.

And speaking of raw, there are also some raw dishes on the menu, as well as awesome raw desserts, like this raw vegan cashew-based lemon cheesecake:

It is from a new company called Seemconi. There are also chocolate and berry cheesecakes from Seemconi sold at Java Green – and they deserve a review all of their own.  They are that delicious.  And I love that, while sweetened with agave, they are still remarkably low in sugar.

Java Green is totally worth a visit.  Yes it is a tiny space and there is sometimes a wait, but I love how I can eat most things on the menu, and how there is a large selection considering the smaller space.

Thanks for reminding me of Java Green! I used to go there all the time when I worked in that part of the city. It's a little hike from my current office, but I'm thinking I should take advantage of this nice weather to make the trek down there soon.

I was in Washington years ago and loved it–though I never found anything like this! That raw cheesecake looks amazing. :)

Thanks for reminding me too! I used to go when I worked on K street. The food is so good, meat-eaters wouldn't even miss the meat! That cheesecake looks divine. I will have to try it.
