Kale Chips Are Going Mainstream

Look what I saw at Whole Foods on Monday:

Labor Day 013

I guess kale chips are mainstream now.  I was tempted for about 5 seconds to try them, but then realized I can make 3 to 4 times the amount for the same price. In fact, the price of kale chips was partially why I bought a dehydrator this year. While you can absolutely make kale chips in the oven, I like being able to just throw them into the dehydrator and not having to watch them as closely. Ironically my husband prefers oven-made kale chips. We make both kinds.

While I think it is great to see more things like kale chips going mainstream, and I am sure there will be time, likely if I am travelling, where I splurge on them, if you do want to make kale chips at home, you should totally check out this post by Meghan Telpner – it has *five* different kale chips recipesAverie’s kale chips are a great slightly sweeter take on kale chips, likely because she uses a red pepper in the coating.  And for some lime deliciousness, be sure to check out Ricki’s kale salad and dehydrate the coated kale rather than eating it as salad.  All these recipes are truly lovely.  Since I did not buy the chips above (or the kale chips I saw at MOM’s Organic Store a couple of weeks ago) here’s a shot of a recent batch I made of Meghan’s Nacho Cheeseless Kale Chips:

Kale Chips

So do you think kale chips going mainstream is good or bad or both? Do you buy kale chips or make your own? What are your food shopping splurges? Mine are definitely nut butters, raw cacao and chia seeds. And organic greens.

I too have noticed that Kale chips seem to be everywhere these days. I even saw them at Winners (similar to TJ Maxx) the other day.

I absolutely love Meghan's version and have been making them on a weekly basis for some time now. How are the dehydrator ones different from the oven? Is the texture different?
