Festive Lights

Pre-Christmas 048
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it! I meant to get this post up yesterday in time for Christmas Eve, but I ended up taking a nap instead, which was much-needed.  I am so excited to share these photos with you.  You see, I have spent most of the month complaining about the lack of festive holiday lights in Washington, DC.  Living in New York, Christmas was nothing short of spectacular. Lots of lights and decorations.  Washington, DC is not the same.  I had barely seen any lights or decorations and I live near Dupont Circle, which is, for all intents and purposes, downtown.  Late Thursday, after leaving work in the late afternoon, I decided it was time to find some Christmas cheer (instead of complaining about the lack of it compared to New York) so my husband and I walked around downtown Washington.  The first sign of cheer was this:

And then, the sun set, and we found the Willard Hotel, which is one of the few places in Washington that goes all out with its holiday decorating:

After basking in the pretty lights at the Willard, we walked over to see the Christmas Tree on the Ellipse by the White House.

For several weeks in December, there are free musical performances near the tree most nights.  Thursday was the last night of performances so we sat down for a few minutes to listen.  Unfortunately, it was bitterly cold, so we left after fifteen minutes.

On the way home, we stopped for some warm beverages (and a treat for husband).  I was happy to discover that Caribou has soy milk that is clearly labelled vegan and gluten-free.  While it does have evaporated cane juice, which I usually avoid, I went ahead and got some steamed soy milk as I needed something a little richer than just tea.

The whole late afternoon and evening were lovely, and the hot beverages were a perfect way to end the evening.  It definitely improved my outlook on the holidays and the season.  I hope you are having a lovely weekend.

I don't know if I would consider Dupont Circle to be downtown, but there are some very nice lights up around the White House and the Gallery Place/Metro Center area.

Beautiful! I'd love to visit DC during the Holidays. Maybe next year? P.S. I'm going to be in DC April 1-3 – maybe we can meet up for a bite :)
