A Chain Ethnic Grocery Store

I know that’s basically an oxymoron, but that’s pretty much the only way to describe CostPlus World Market. I stopped by there yesterday and thought, yet again, how it has some great products (including yummy gingerbread cookies I used to have growing up in Switzerland) yet has that mass marketing feel.

They do have furniture and furnishings but I have mainly explored their food section — some good spices, a decent selection of chutneys, curry simmer sauces and other condiments, lots of packaged desserts and candy from other countries (like gingerbread cookies, pandoro, panettone, Cadburys).

On one hand, I do think it’s a great concept — especially in an area that does not have ton of ethnic grocery stores — many of the World Market reviews I have read specifically say they love how the store has hard-to-find foodstuffs, but on the other hand, as I enjoy a visit there, I don’t think to go back often either.

Have you been to World Market and what do you think of it?
