Thoughts on Gourmet

At one point, a few years ago, I had a subscription to Gourmet.  Then I had my whole magazine simplification program and ended up not resubscribing, always keeping it on my list for when life did not involve commuting between cities and allowed time for more intricate cooking.  Now, of course, Gourmet is gone {see Kim O’Donnel’s Lick Your Chops for a summary of events}.  I actually find it more shocking than Domino’s demise, though, because Gourmet was an institution through so many generations. I also have loved reading all the homages and thoughts on Gourmet around the food blogging world.  Here are some of my favorites:

*Sweet Amandine’s photos about how Gourmet inhabited her life and apartment
*Abbey’s reaction that her demographic got flushed and how paper media is still so important
*Eat Make Read’s Gourmet favorites, including Sweet Potato Gnocchi I had bookmarked as inspiration for making egg-free, wheat-free gnocchi {total tangent, but I was thinking of borrowing from the Gourmet version and this gluten-free version)

and, perhaps less homage, more analysis:

*Amanda Hesser’s take on new versus old media for food writing and publishing
