Indulgent Dinner at Cafe Green in Washington, DC

Cafe Green + Saturday Lunchbox 008

Earlier this month I celebrated my 32nd birthday, and one of the things on my birthday list was an indulgent dinner at Cafe Green. Specifically, I wanted to try the sweet potato gnocchi with sage sauce (since I had loved the summer gnocchi).  And the raw brownie since I usually avoid most sugars, including natural sugars like dates.  One of the things I love about Cafe Green is the vast gluten-free selection.  Every single thing husband and I ordered that night was gluten-free in addition to being vegan – eating out with a gluten and dairy intolerance can be tricky and it is so nice to have variety. Apologies for the flash photography – the food was too delicious not to share with you all. Sadly, the night husband and I went to Cafe Green, they were out of gnocchi, so instead I opted for the brown rice paella as my entree:

It was replete with saffron and vinegary artichokes and other vegetables and very satisfying. I had originally thought I would get the ceviche as an appetizer, but instead we decided to split the patatas bravas:

I do not often eat potatoes so these were a treat.  And they were deliciously spiced with a complex tomato sauce.  For his entree, husband got the tempeh curry, which I have had several times before and always enjoy:

And for dessert, we shared a raw brownie:

It was gooey and chewy and had avocado chocolate frosting. Totally birthday-treat-worthy!

I always really enjoy the food at Cafe Green.  Cafe Green’s menu is seasonal and changes accordingly, so always be sure to confirm an item’s gluten-free status.  If you are curious about Cafe Green, see this post on snacks and smoothies,  this post focusing on brunch, and my rave for the the awesome gluten-free gnocchi and the ceviche appetizer. I definitely plan to go back to Cafe Green to get the sweet potato gnocchi (I also found a review and the recipe online).

Yum! It sounds delicious. What a wonderful birthday treat! I was just at Java Green on Friday, and it reminded me that I have yet to try Cafe Green so I was happy to see your review. I'll definitely have to give it a try!
