Art Journal Workshop 010

Today I took a break from the insanity of work to go to an Art Journaling Workshop at Tranquilspace.  Here I am with my friend Hilary with some of our finished journal pages.  Don’t we look happy and relaxed.  The workshop was tons of fun.  Here is the description:

Fuel your creative spark with a few hours of artistic play with Kimberly Wilson. Learn basic techniques to bring your thoughts and dreams to life in a visual, playful, inspiring manner. Follow suggested prompts or flow freely. Supply list: bring magazines and images you love such as postcards and photographs, your journal, and writing tools. Additional ephemera will be provided. No experience needed, open to all who crave a more colorful mode of expression.

I love Kimberly’s workshops.  I went to two of them in 2009 which were wonderful.  This one was about art journaling, which I now finally understand is different from collaging – collaging is more about a snapshot in time, while art journaling is using various art media to journal, instead of using just the written word.

Kimberly always leads very dynamic and engaging workshops (which is why I forgot to take a picture of her).  She mentioned that there are studies that show that art journaling can have beneficial effects in terms of reducing stress. When I lived in New York, I collaged in my journal more (which, it turns out, is a form of art journaling) but then I moved more into collaging.  Lately that has fallen by the wayside on account of long hours of work and also all the cooking I do, which I enjoy but does take time.  This workshop was a way to reconnect with that.  And see some friends too.  Here is Danielle (who is camouflaged by art):

One thing I love about Kimberly’s workshops is that she always has a goodie bag – today’s contained ephemera for the art journaling:

This was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. I highly recommend it as a break.  Especially when topped off with dinner at yummy Café Green.  See more on Art Journaling over at Kimberly’s blog.
