art journal workshop July 2011 009

I love to collage and journal, but never seem to do it often these days – so I jumped on the chance to take Kimberly Wilson’s Art Journaling Workshop at Tranquilspace today – I went to the same workshop in January and had such fun I had to take it again, particularly since my friends Carolyn and Lauren were going as well. Here is Carolyn journaling:

And Lauren with one of the many pages she completed:

Here I am journaling:

I love pretty paper and pens.  The workshop was tons of fun and included a stretch break with a few easy (sundress-appropriate) yoga poses. Here is the description:

Fuel your creative spark with a few hours of artistic play with Kimberly Wilson. Learn basic techniques to bring your thoughts and dreams to life in a visual, playful, inspiring manner. Follow suggested prompts or flow freely. Supply list: bring magazines and images you love such as postcards and photographs, your journal, and writing tools. Additional ephemera will be provided. No experience needed, open to all who crave a more colorful mode of expression.

Kimberly is on the left of this picture:

Lisa is on the right and made a brilliant suggestion, which was to take pictures of our collages as we put them together.  Since I have posted past collages on the blog before, I thought it might be fun to include the progress pictures:

I was really excited to learn more about layering ephemera and various types of papers from Kimberly.  I layered each side a bit differently, picking up themes and colors from each side:

Part of the workshop included responding to writing prompts,so I added an envelope to house some of the writing I did:

More envelopes on the left side:

Such fun!

Art Journaling makes one hungry, so afterwards Carolyn, Lauren and I went to Café Green. And the beautiful Carol joined us:

She was at the last Art Journal workshop and is a dear friend.

Such a fun afternoon!  If you are curious about Art Journaling – not only is it fun, but it is also a form of self-care:

There are some indications that drawing in a visual journal, even for a few minutes a day, has some health benefits, too. According to Elizabeth Warson, professor at George Washington University’s art therapy program, the regular practice of creating via an art journal can reduce your heart rate, increase serotonin flow and immune cells, and decrease stress responses. (Psychology Today)

How perfect for this month of self-care

Woah, you are quick! :-) Love the pictures! What a great day. Once I finally got home tonight I continued cutting, tearing, pasting and writing–pretty sure Kimberly has created a monster!

Very cool and fun! A dear friend of mine has a blog where she shares her wonderful writing, life tales, and her art journal pages. Here's the link if you want to take a look: http://v-grrrl.squarespace.com/photo-album/adventures-in-art/ This experience totally looks like self care to me, Valerie. :-)

Great photos! I really enjoyed the art journal workshop too, but your pages are way prettier than mine, can you design my art journal? :-) Thanks for the inspiration.

Also, your blog is so impressive. Here's mine:

What a wonderful way to spend the day with friends. I'm always bringing home scrapbook paper fr/ the craft stores for use in my photography. Journaling as therapy is an excellent idea. Love your results. Thanks for sharing the PT article. : }
