What is Sunbutter?

by Valerie on August 5, 2010 · 6 comments

After my post on Iris’ delicious Sweet Sesame Noodles, made with sweet potatoes and Sunbutter, I was asked by a couple of you about Sunbutter.  It’s a delicious roasted sunflower seed butter that tastes eerily close to peanut butter.  And fortunately for me, it now comes in a no-sugar, no-salt version.  I initially discovered  Regular Sunbutter at this yoga retreat and loved it and promptly kicked my all-natural peanut butter out of the kitchen in favor of Sunbutter.  Fast forward a few months later when, among many things, I cut out refined sugars, and I discovered that my beloved Sunbutter did indeed have sugar.  I knew there was an no-sugar version out there, but I was never able to get my hands on it in local stores.  A few weeks ago, while browsing for specialty groceries on Amazon, I noticed the following:
Sunbutter Organic Sunflower Seed Spread, 16-Ounce Plastic Jars (Pack of 3)
Organic Sunbutter without sugar or salt. Just roasted sunflower seeds, and completely gluten-free.  I promptly ordered the Organic Sunbutter (turned out Amazon had the best price on this item as long as you were willing to buy three jars) and was excited to tear into the box when it arrived.  The flavor is very similar to the regular Sunbutter, especially if used in a recipe such as the Sweet Sesame Noodles, which already has sweet and salty components.  Used as a spread, the Organic Sunbutter is missing a certain little something. I have been known to add a tiny sprinkle of sea salt on it, and have wondered about adding a drop of stevia.  These are all minor adjustment that are not even necessary. I still prefer the Organic over the Regular Sunbutter. I am just glad to have Sunbutter back in my life for when I want to make recipes that call for peanut butter, which is technically on my long list of foods to avoid from my ND.  Because the list is long, and I do tolerate it, it moved onto the list of things I eat very occasionally (i.e. while travelling), and I eat the peanut butter she recommended.  That said, since I should not be eating it at all, and I like Sunbutter better,  I was excited to find Organic Sunbutter. I think next on my list of recipes to make with Sunbutter is this Peanut-Free Sunbutter Satay Sauce from Affairs of Living.

I have seen Sunbutter a couple of times at the grocery store but have been hesitant to try it. Thank you so much for the review. I am going to pick it up this week with my groceries and give it a try.

That's the only brand of sunbutter I've been able to find that doesn't have some form of sugar. Too bad, since it's super expensive. But since I can't have any other nutbutters, it's been a real treat for me!

Thanks for clarifying. I had never heard of sunbutter before a few days ago. It's really good to know since my FIL is allergic to peanuts. Plus, it sounds like a great alternative for my son, since he isn't three, yet. It sounds healthier that peanut butter, anyway. I just really love peanut butter, so I have been hesitant to give it up. I'll have to check out the sugar-free one. I'm not into sugar with my nuts. Is that ok to say? Sounds wrong for some reason. :)

OMG I had no idea it came with no sugar now! I tried a bite a couple weeks ago and liked it so much better than my homemade sunflower seed butter. I'll have to hit it up. Thanks!!!
